Hepatitis B affects millions worldwide
Around 296 million people globally live with chronic Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection, including over 6 million children under 5 years old. Chronic HBV can cause liver damage, cirrhosis, and liver cancer, making it one of the leading causes of liver-related deaths worldwide.
Most infections start at birth
The main source of chronic HBV infection is transmission from mother to child during childbirth. Without vaccination, 9 out of 10 babies infected at birth will develop lifelong chronic infection, putting them at risk for serious illness later in life.
The birth dose is the strongest shield
A Hepatitis B vaccine given within 24 hours of birth is the most effective way to prevent infection. When followed by 2–3 additional doses, it provides lifelong protection against HBV.
Proven protection, global impact
Since the 1980s, Hepatitis B vaccines have protected millions of people. Studies show they will prevent 38 million deaths among individuals born between 2000 and 2030 in 98 low- and middle-income countries.
