CDDEP is joining the CDC in promoting the proper use of antibiotics as part of its Get Smart About Antibiotics week. Below are just a few antibiotic resistance media and publications that CDDEP has been involved in related to this week’s events:

TED Talk: “The Coming Crisis in Antibiotics”

Ramanan Laxminarayan’s talk from TEDMED 2014, entitled “The Coming Crisis in Antibiotics” is now available online. The talk highlights the need to balance conservation and innovation in dual strategies of antibiotic stewardship and development.TEDMED will also be hosting a twitter chat with Dr. Laxminarayan about antibiotic resistance this Wednesday, November 19 at noon EST—join us and ask questions the hashtag #TEDMED.

New Lancet Infectious Diseases Paper: Hospital Antibiotic Therapy and Deescalating Antibiotic Use

A new study co-authored by researchers at CDDEP was published yesterday in the Lancet Infectious Diseases about how courses of antibiotic therapy in US hospitals change over the duration of patients’ treatment. One of the paper’s authors, Nikolay Braykov, has written a post for the CDDEP blog about simple stewardship practices hospitals haven’t been using, and what they can do to help in the fight against antibiotic resistance.

Events all week:

Other events happening around the world to coincide with Antibiotic Awareness Day on November 18th include opening of submissions for the 2014 Longitude Prize, the Antibiotic Guardians campaign and Tuesday’s CDC twitter chat on antibiotic resistance. In addition, we’ll have new posts all week at the CDDEP blog and website!

With cold and flu season setting in, it is especially important to be vigilant about preventing infections and knowing when antibiotic treatments are appropriate. To find out how you can present increases in resistance, see the CDC’s tips or watch CDDEP’s video “Unstoppable Superbugs: Closer Than We Think?”
