Access to Effective Antibiotics
Antibiotic use plays a major role in driving antimicrobial resistance (AMR), making it essential to reduce unnecessary or inappropriate prescribing. At the same time, many regions of the world face a dual challenge: while some antibiotics are overused or misused, others remain in critically short supply or entirely inaccessible. This imbalance contributes to untreated infections and preventable deaths. More people die from a lack of access to antibiotics than from AMR infections.
To address both the burden of death and severe illness from bacterial infections and control the rise of AMR, the One Health Trust executes research about and runs initiatives focusing on four strategies: preventing infections, using current antibiotics better, expanding access to antibiotics that are already available, and finding new antibiotics while ensuring those that are accessible to patients in need are also available.
