The One Health Trust, in collaboration with the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI), hosted a two-day Global Antibiotic Resistance Partnership (GARP) workshop in Nairobi, Kenya, on October 30-31, 2024. Centered on the theme “The Value of Vaccines in Mitigating Antimicrobial Resistance,” the workshop brought together experts in healthcare, research, and policy to examine how vaccines can play a central role in strategies to address antimicrobial resistance (AMR).
The workshop marked the first in-person meeting of GARP-Kenya’s technical working group, including representatives from the Ministry of Health, academic institutions, and healthcare sectors. Participants discussed the potential of vaccines to reduce AMR, the economic implications of vaccine-driven interventions, and how these approaches could be integrated into Kenya’s national AMR strategy.
The agenda included presentations on the role of vaccines in preventing infectious diseases and reducing antibiotic use, panel discussions on Kenya’s AMR landscape, and collaborative sessions to refine draft documents, including a policy brief and a technical report. These interactive sessions focused on tailoring recommendations to Kenya’s specific health system priorities and AMR challenges, paving the way for the integration of vaccines into future national AMR action plans.
