The One Health Trust in collaboration with Christian Medical College hosted a Global Antibiotic Resistance Partnership (GARP) India in-person workshop, on June 6-7, 2025, in Vellore, Tamil Nadu, India.
A diverse group of policymakers, clinicians, researchers, and industry experts attended the two-day workshop. Participants examined the critical role of vaccines in addressing antimicrobial resistance (AMR).
Day one covered in-depth discussions on the role of vaccines in addressing AMR, including insights from clinicians on vaccine use in practice, policy lessons from the rollout of the rotavirus vaccine in India, and national and global factors influencing vaccine prioritization and uptake of vaccines.
Participants explored the economic impact and cost-effectiveness of adult immunization for AMR mitigation, strategies to address vaccine hesitancy, and the contributions of India’s pharmaceutical sector to vaccine manufacturing. They also discussed the economic modeling of maternal vaccines for Klebsiella pneumoniae in low- and middle-income countries.
The day concluded with a working session, where participants shared potential recommendations for the upcoming GARP India policy brief and discussed effective strategies to engage government stakeholders in its dissemination.
Day two of the workshop focused on finalizing policy recommendations to inform GARP India’s upcoming brief. The technical working group considered a range of factors such as the stage of development, efficacy, and implementation feasibility of key vaccines relevant to AMR mitigation in India. Discussions also emphasized strategies to reduce vaccine hesitancy and ensure equitable access to priority vaccines.
The workshop highlighted the importance of cross-sector collaboration and evidence-based policymaking to strengthen vaccine use as a tool in the fight against AMR in India and globally.
