Giridara Gopal

Postdoctoral Fellow

Dr. Giridara Gopal is a Postdoctoral Fellow based in Bangalore, India.

At the One Health Trust, Dr. Gopal is the principal investigator of a One Health surveillance platform in development in Chikkaballapur, Karnataka. A community-based cancer screening program was carried out successfully using this platform in late 2021. Dr. Gopal also works on building mathematical models for understanding disease dynamics and estimating the cost-effectiveness of interventions targeting specific pathogens like influenza, Pneumococcus, cholera, typhoid, rotavirus, SARS-CoV-2, and more. Dr. Gopal will also conduct large interventional studies on controlling hospital-acquired infections.

Dr. Gopal was previously involved in COVID-19 research in India and is one of the leads of iCART, the team behind www.covidtoday.in, which provides daily updates of epidemiologic indicators at the national and sub-national levels in India. He was recently awarded the Health Policy and Systems Research (HPSR) fellowship where he is planning to study the challenges in multi-sectoral coordination of stakeholders for the One Health approach in India.

He did his Ph.D. at the Centre for Community Medicine, in the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi. His thesis was on topics related to infectious disease epidemiology and health economics.

His interests include applied epidemiology, operational research, infectious disease modeling, health economics, machine learning/artificial intelligence, policy research, and health system strengthening through digital technology innovations.
