Overview:  

Antibiotics have saved millions of lives by making many bacterial infections treatable. But bacteria are becoming resistant to these medicines, making infections harder to treat and increasing the risk of serious illness and death. 

Antibiotic resistance is not just a human health problem. Resistant bacteria can move between people, animals, and the environment through food, water, wastewater, agriculture, and other pathways. This makes antibiotic resistance a One Health challenge. 

In this article, OHT researchers explore how antibiotic resistance develops and spreads, and why tackling it requires action across human, animal, and environmental health. 

The Question: 

How does antibiotic resistance develop and spread across people, animals, and the environment, and how can a One Health approach help prevent and reduce its spread? 

The Findings: 

The authors found that antibiotic resistance is driven by many connected factors, including antibiotic use, pollution, wastewater, agriculture, and the spread of resistant bacteria between animals and people. 

They argue that preventing infections is one of the best ways to reduce antibiotic use and resistance. They also highlight the need for better vaccination, infection prevention, wastewater treatment, surveillance, and responsible antibiotic use. 

The authors propose a One Health approach to help identify and prioritize veterinary vaccines that could prevent diseases in animals and reduce the spread of infections and antibiotic resistance to people.
