The Question

Is rectal artesunate a cost-effective treatment for children with severe malaria in rural Africa?

What we found

Given that children suffering from severe malaria cannot take oral medication due to vomiting and that formal healthcare facilities are often out of reach, rectal artesunates are a cost-effective method of treating severe malaria in children.

Why it matters

Effective malaria treatments that can be delivered by healthcare workers in rural settings are urgently needed to reduce the burden of malaria in vulnerable populations, such as children.
