Overview
As of 2021, fewer than 40% of Africa Union member states had published guidelines with recommendations for treating specific diseases, syndromes, and pathogens. Recommendations for antimicrobial treatment varied drastically and had apparently been developed without adequate data. One Health Trust researchers and the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) convened an interdisciplinary panel of infectious disease clinicians and public health experts from across Africa Union member states to develop the first edition of the African Antibiotic Treatment Guidelines for Common Bacterial Infections and Syndromes.
