A recap of recent coverage of CDDEP’s work on antibiotic resistance through our Extending the Cure project:

Newsweek’s Are We Running Out of Antibiotics? examines how we’ve evolved to a critical point in managing bacterial infections: current antibiotics are rapidly losing effectiveness and few new ones are in the development pipeline. Author Jeneen Interlandi goes on to articulate the paradigm shift at the heart of Extending the Cure’s work that of viewing antibiotics like valued natural resources that require mindful conservation strategies.

The Scientist offers up 5 Ways to Save Antibiotics, including implementing a conservation framework and reducing hospital-acquired infections, often a source of potent antibiotic-resistant bacterial strains.

Also check out Extending the Cure s new visual tool ResistanceMap (updated version just released), which has been generating some buzz over at Wired Science and ScienceBlogs. Expect much more from ResistanceMap in the months to come, including videos of antibiotic use levels and expanded resistance tracking in the United States and worldwide.
