In his Hindustan Times column, OHT’s Dr. Ramanan Laxminarayan examines whether GDP alone is an adequate measure of prosperity and national progress. 

He argues that economic growth figures do not capture the full range of assets that contribute to people’s well-being, including human capital, infrastructure, and natural resources such as forests, freshwater, and fisheries. 

Dr. Laxminarayan highlights the concept of inclusive wealth, which considers the value of a country’s production and human and natural capital alongside conventional measures of economic activity. 

He argues that India’s pursuit of prosperity should extend beyond GDP growth to include investments in health and education, productive infrastructure, and the shielding of natural capital.
