One Health Trust director Ramanan Laxminarayan co-authored a correspondence piece, recently published in Nature Microbiology, that discusses the importance of understanding how antimicrobial resistance (AMR) relates to environmental health. While many organizations, including the United Nations, have adopted a One Health lens when considering the harmful impact of AMR, the authors of this correspondence caution against conflating human and environmental health regarding the effects of AMR. They emphasize that there is limited evidence that AMR has any deleterious effect on the environment; rather, the environment is involved in the evolution and transmission of resistant pathogens.
