The Question

How can malaria models, and resulting elimination strategies, take into account the effects of human migration on disease transmission?

What we found

The mapping of human migration and its effects on infection movement has important implications for malaria interventions.  Centralized elimination strategies stand a higher chance of success in isolated areas than in areas with increased population movement.

Why it matters

Strategies to eliminate malaria should take into account population dynamics in order to boost effectiveness and reduce the burden of malaria across regions.
