Overview:

This One Health Trust co-authored study looks at how two key aspects of higher education—college quality and post-graduation certification scores—influence hiring for recent information technology (IT) engineering graduates in India. The research focuses on whether employers value these educational credentials when selecting candidates.

The Question:

Do small and medium-sized firms in India consider a graduate’s college quality or certification test scores when making hiring decisions?

The Findings:

Neither college ranking nor certification scores made much of a difference. Employers didn’t favor graduates from mid-tier ranked colleges over those from unranked colleges, despite efforts to promote college rankings in India. Scoring high on the test didn’t increase the likelihood of getting a callback compared to scoring low. Women received more first-round callbacks, suggesting a small gender preference in the male-dominated IT industry.
