The University of Minnesota’s CIDRAP featured a major new study by One Health Trust researchers and collaborators.
This is the largest retrospective analysis to date on antimicrobial susceptibility data from African countries. The study, published in PLOS Medicine, reveals high levels (up to 70% in some countries) of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in critical pathogens such as Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus.
The findings point to significant variation in AMR across countries and expose serious gaps in testing capacity, data quality, and laboratory infrastructure. These challenges limit the region’s ability to track and respond to AMR effectively.
The study highlights the urgent need for sustained large-scale investment in laboratory systems and healthcare access to combat the growing threat of AMR in Africa.
