On January 16, several members of the Lancet Commission on Investing in Health, of which CDDEP serves as Secretariat, will meet at the United Nations North Lawn Building in New York to discuss strategies for achieving a “grand convergence” in health. A grand convergence, as laid out in the Commission’s report “Global Health 2035: a world converging within a generation“, published in The Lancet on December 3, entails the reduction of infectious, child and maternal mortality rates to universally low levels by 2035. This goal, the Commission asserts, is well within the financial and technological reach of the international community. However, argued in an editorial published today in The Lancet, it can only be achieved if it is prioritized by the international community perhaps as a post-2015 UN Sustainable Development Goal.

The UN event will bring global health leaders together to make a case for international investment in a grand convergence. Hosted by Geir O. Pedersen, Norway’s permanent representative to the UN, speakers will include Commissioners Gavin Yamey of the University of California, San Francisco; Agn s Binagwaho, Minister of Health of Rwanda; Ariel Pablos M ndez of USAID; K. Srinath Reddy, president of the Public Health Foundation of India; and Margaret E. Kruk of Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health.
