Rituparna De

Dr. Rituparna De is OHT’s Associate Director of Life Sciences, based in Bangalore, India.  

At OHT, she leads laboratory initiatives, serves as the member-secretary of the institutional ethics committee, co-supervises PhD students, and directs the OHT-BITS Pilani joint PhD program. 

Her research at OHT focuses on antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and infectious disease surveillance, environmental monitoring and wastewater surveillance, and metagenomic and genomic surveillance. She is particularly interested in microbial evolution, ecology, and the selection of antimicrobial resistance genes. 

Before joining OHT, Dr. De worked as a non-resident Indians scientist at the Department of Health Research under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India and as a microbiologist at the World Health Organization’s National Polio Laboratory in Kolkata. She has held research positions at global institutions, including Umeå University, Sweden; Ohio State University, United States; and the European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI) in the UK. She was nominated as an expert to the Expert Group of ICMR’s gut microbiome initiative to identify research priorities for the country in 2024.

Dr. De holds a PhD from Jadavpur University, completed as an Okayama University PhD Fellow at ICMR- National Institute for Research in Bacterial Infections. She also has a master’s and bachelor’s degree in Biotechnology from Bangalore University. She is a former visiting researcher at the International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh. 

Her research interests include environmental surveillance of AMR, microbial evolution and ecology, and the selection of antimicrobial resistance genes.
