CDDEP is joining the CDC in promoting the proper use of antibiotics as part of its Get Smart: Know When Antibiotics Work campaign.

Since 2008, Get Smart About Antibiotics Week has been an annual effort by the CDC to increase awareness about the proper use of antibiotics. This year, organizations around the world are taking part in spreading the message:

  • Australia’s NPS MedicineWise is hosting Antibiotic Awareness Week.
  • A group of healthcare partners in Canada have joined together to promote awareness.
  • The European Center for Disease Prevention and Control and the Centre for Health Protection in Hong Kong held Antibiotic Awareness Days on November 18 in the EU and Hong Kong, respectively.

With cold and flu season setting in, it is especially important to be vigilant about preventing infections and knowing when antibiotic treatments are appropriate. To learn more about the causes of antibiotic resistance and the challenges it presents for societies around the globe, check out a new report co-authored by CDDEP Director Ramanan Laxminarayan, published Sunday in The Lancet Infectious Diseases.
